Quilts: Rajasthan, apart from producing
excellent handicrafts, is famous for it's handmade razais (quilts).
Initially, these quilts were used by the Rajasthani men, always on the
move, to keep themselves warm in cold dessert nights as they were very
light to carry yet warm. With the passage of time these quilts got
popular in other parts as well and now globally. This art is an
inherited legacy as some families have been carders for generations.
The specialty of it lies in carding of the filled in cotton. As soon as
the fresh crop comes in, the dross is carded away to get the finest
fibers. A week of carding reduces a kilo of cotton to not more than 100
grams. It is then evenly filled in covers made of fine textured cotton
called 'malmal'. Lastly fine running stitch by hand, is done on the
entire surface, to hold the cotton in place. These are available in
beautiful patterns and vibrant colors using vegetable dyes. Printing is
mainly done by hand block or screen-printing techniques. Lighter the
quilt, the more evenly is the cotton filled in and the warmer it will
be. |
